But then, I think that is off-topic, though I'd be interested to know
by
e-mail.

It's not off-topic. The KJV is crown copyright (still) and shouldn't be
used without license. The !HolyBible (Martin Wuerthner & ExpLAN) has a
licence to use it but most other sources don't.

I'm 90% sure you are wrong about the KJV copyright situation. Although the
crown holds the copyright, the text is generally the one freely
distributed because the copyright allows it for non-commercial use. PD
bible readers invariably use KJV text for that reason.

I understand that the USA don't recognise that limitation so copies of
the Bible from those foreign shores may well not be legal to use in the
UK.

As far as other versions of the bible are concerned - American or
otherwise - they are useable anywhere in the world, but subject to
copyright. What that copyright lets you do with the text varies, but it
certainly doesn't preclude you from reading it in other countries.

The NIV, which is another extremely popular translation, allows their text
to be quoted in books and web sites as long as it isn't the majority text
or exceed 500 verses. See http://www.hodderheadline.co.uk/religion2.asp
