Apple Mail seems to be quite fussy about the structure of the mbox
file. Not knowing about the .mbox extension, loked at the format of a
file exported from Mail which led me to try the so called "From"
format export from !Messenger. Unfortunately, !Messenger doesn't put
any data in the "From " field, which should contain a name and a date
in a fixed format, so it was necessary to write an awk script to fill
in the necessary data by extracting it from other mail headers.
Without this, the whole file is imported as one long message.

It's not surprising that you might run into problems. mbox isn't a
standard (you won't find it defined nicely in an RFC, for example).

I finally got it to work. Mail seems to be able to recognise a valid
file from its structure, even without the .mbox extension.
