Is there a
utility which shows the contents of the clipboard

You may have to drag the contents to an editor to see them:

AIUI the clipboard isn't necessarily text, it can be any? type of file or
have I got it wrong?
The module, IcnClipBrd, pointed to by the quoted URL is about the use
of the global clipboard with writable icons.
I've just tried copying a sprite on to the clipboard from within Paint
but apparently unsuccessfully! Also draw, text and sprite into Artworks
again unsuccesfully so may be I am wrong!
On what platform and with what applications. Only the Select versions of
!Paint and !Draw support the global clipboard. Using RO6pv I can copy
and paste from both Paint and Draw into Easiwriter.
The application !ClipBoard at the above URL on Select will show what the
clipboard is pointing to. (The module is not required on Select and
should not be loaded.)
