It was the only way I ever heard of (until now.) Those I
knew at university at many different schools had had much
the same experience.

The head of department was supposed to be one of the most
highly regarded classical scholars in the country. He was
also one of the countries most famous crossword setters,
alluded to in one of the Inspector Morse TV films (not one
of the books).

When I took my O level, there was even a weekly
"newspaper" in Latin for schools. And, if you were a
member of the RC church, services were in latin.

I always understood that the point of that was to prevent
the ordinary person from understanding the service.
