But if you cannot find anything suitable to convert, you're looking at a
much larger programming involvement. And given the money involved in
RISC OS, you're unlikely to find anyone to invest the time. Instead,
they're much more likely to spend time on something that interests
_them_.
And that last sentence really says it all: 'spend time on something that
interests them'.
Forget customer demand, forget that if RISC OS is to survive it must have
a business base, forget that the customer is always right; just do what you
want to do and hope someone wants to buy it.
Those who succeed in business look for a gap in the market and try and fill
it. That means listening to potential customers.
The problem is the developers of Prophet did that, but still at the end of
the day couldn't make it pay so have gone where they can make it pay.
Richard doesn't want an accounts package written from scratch, he wants the
exosting one updated and expanded, but it isn't going to happen.
Unfortunately I feel RISCOS has now fallen off the viability curve, it is
lacking in too many fundamental areas which aren't going to be addressed by a
few enthusiasts working in their spare time. The only way it is going to
work if some serious money is plowed into developing a suite of applications
that do what people need and hardware that they want to use, ie a laptop.
Without a laptop, a proper browser, a good accounts app, a serious genealogy
app, database, spread*** and so on the platform is a dead man walking.
Above all it needs proper marketing which it has never had.
That's a very succinct summary.
