The extra hard disc isn't necessary, though changing to the new disc
format is a good idea eventually. If you ask a dealer to help, you may as
well get the disc done at that point (I'd hope a RO4 installer would have
facilities for backing up and restoring a disc).
That said, if your disc is 7 years old, I would think that now would be a
good time to buy a new one, format it to the new format, and copy all your
data across.

Impression works fine with RISC OS 4. The only problem I know of is that
it is unhappy if you rename a file with >10 characters in the name from
the filer: Impression will load it, but things can get wobbly after that.
Impression won't let you save files with >10 chars in the name, so it
isn't that much of a problem.

Why would you lose them?
If you've already got the SA, then RO4 isn't a big deal. The SA upgrade
will break a lot of things; RO4 (IME) didn't -- I did RO4 first and then
upgraded to an SA.

It's worth doing. There are a lot of small things in RO4/5 that seem
silly when mentioned but are indispensable once they become familiar.
If nothing else, the improved speed and stability of the OS over RO3
should be a good reason to get the ROMs off the shelf and into your
machine.
