I think so, it says, "(tick) writable 702Mb (79.57)

I got this info via email, and it was accepted OK.
The upgrade seemed to be successful, and I'm now on v1.61.

Well, yes, but I was trying to establish that the CD player seems to
be physically working.

Apparently not, I have an ISO image on my HD.

So I fired up the upgraded !CDBurn, and dragged the ISO image to it,
and it gave a buffer underrun error, so I took the speed down to 1 (!)
tried again, it started, telling me it was going to take 9 mins 1 sec
then ... "CD writer not ready."

I'm going to try again firing up before I put the CD in as suggested
by Paul.

Later:
I took out the CD and did a control-break.
Fired up the new !CDBurn.
Dragged the ISO image to it.
Put in a CD.
Waited until the light stopped flickering and clicked Write.
Again, it told me it was going to take 9mins 1 sec (for <45Mb!)
A few seconds later, "CD writer not ready."
:-(((
