"Device not ready" (CDBurn)

I've never had much luck with !CDBurn, and in fact have only been able
to burn 2 CDs using it. Of course, it may be my CDBurner, which has a
sticker on it saying liteonit, but no other model details that I can
see.

The current hassle is this:
I'm trying to burn files onto a CD, but when it (evantually) gets to
the writing stage, I'm getting an error message "Device not ready".
This has happened over three days, the machine is switched off at
night.

I noticed from the website that my version is out of date
(v1.58beta4), so I tried to upgrade.
You need a user name and a login number. My info box has 'sold by CJE'
as the user plus a number, but these don't work.
The website says 'subscribe to the Smartgroup and read through the
files to find out how to log on.' I've read here that some people
don't like Smartgroups, so I'm reluctant to do it just so that I can
read back through the archives to find out how to log on (seems like
it might be a long haul on dial-up).
Also, the front page of the site says that the author is 'taking a
break' for four weeks. Although that was in September, the fact that
the notice hasn't been changed implies that the break has had to be
longer than he anticipated, so I'm not keen to pester him by email.

So first things first:
The CD drive is reading discs OK.
Trying out the blank CDs afterwards on the pc showed them to be OK
too.
How do I make the device ready? (SARPC)

(BTW, I also tried creating an ISO image first then trying to burn,
whereupon the error message changed to 'CD writer not ready'. I've
also tried 'simulating' first, no difference.)

TIA & Slainte

Liz
