Sorry to reply to my own posting but I have solved the problem.
By deleting all the pre-entered figures , entering just the amount ie
30.00 ( no preceding pound sign etc ) and pressing return instead of
clicking on the ' next ' button works !!

Thanks to all who replied which gave me various leads to the solution.
