Re: DNS v. 10 Preferred -- is all this trouble covert?

I ordered DNS V9 last year, and had so much trouble with it
crashing and problems -- I ended up using my hands which I cannot
do without great pain -- that I sent it back.

I use NaturallySpeaking 9, including frequent voice-activated
scripts that do all sorts of stuff with Windows, all day long
without crashing.

When I saw David Pogue (NYTimes) show some of the great new
features with DNS 10, I thought, hopefully Nuance will have taken
a lot of the bugs out. (My DNS 8 had big quirks -- the main one
having to do with "Dsgn MyCommands" and freezing, something there
was no help with nor mention of on the support page.

Great new features do not improve basic functionality.

Well, I've been writing down all the problems I've been having
with DNS v10 Pref, but I'm afraid to call Nuance because I get one
free tech call and that's it. It used to freeze a lot in Internet
Explorer 7.

Maybe Internet Explorer is one of your problems.

The other day I had to start my system over from a previous day (I
was working on a Word file and my screen suddenly went blue) and I
completely lost my Dragon and had to make a new user. Could not
import my voice files.

Sounds like you have significant system configuration problems, or
you are using a pre-Windows XP operating system.

What version of Windows are you using? My system is solid, using
Windows XP.

Every time I close out of Dragon, I get "VoiceBar Damon...
[something something]" and I click okay to let it close, but then
have to click End Now. That doesn't look good.

That's a basic problem you need to resolve. You should work on one
problem at a time. That sounds like a good start.

Now I wait and wait. I try things like closing any website that
may have videos on it, in case that's it. Using it for any length
of time, like over 2 hours makes it really slow. If I reopen it
during a session, it will not type into e-mails any longer. Nor on
the Internet. I always have to use dictation box, an extra
pain/step.

All of your problems are not caused by NaturallySpeaking. Try
Firefox. Internet Explorer was causing problems for me. I noticed
that the problems varied from one website to another. So I switched
to Firefox for everything except checking MSN e-mail. Now using
Firefox I don't have to wait when loading a page, before issuing a
voice activated script command. I can tell there are things going on
in Internet Explorer that aren't really necessary and/or the coding
is just very bad. The Firefox learning curve is not bad. Browsing is
browsing. All you need to figure out is how to use the
bookmarks/favorites and the history (if you use that).

Besides switching to Firefox, more important would be to find/hire a
highly skilled techie friend that can clean up your system. Sounds
like you have system problems.

On this very posting, I am waiting about 7 seconds for it to print
out clumps of type and voicing, or any corrections, on*each part*.

I just added a whole 'nother gig of RAM in my fairly new Dell PC
computer.

I'm impressed by Dell's online support, but they are known for
cluttering up the users system with all sorts of unnecessary
software. If it were my computer, I would do a fresh uncluttered
install of Windows XP. And from time to time I would make a
known-good backup of my installation.

By the way. Always keep a copy of any important files from your
computer to removable media.

I've checked the recent postings for support, but they don't
really address these problems. (I haven't checked in the last
week, but Nuance usually disappoints me, so my frustration is
based on reality.)

Maybe other people out there are having similar problems, and
we're all expected to just grin and bear it and wait for the next
"better" and perhaps quirkier version to make Nuance more money
--?

I recall offering to help you personally. I think you are somewhat
misled about the cause of your problems. NaturallySpeaking is a very
complicated program that interacts heavily with your system, but I'm
led to believe that they do it well (modularly, as opposed to
ViaVoice which seemed to be coded like a big bowl of spaghetti).
