Ten Year Anniversary For These Newsgroups And An Announcement

Hi folks,

Circa ten years ago these newsgroups were created as a moderated
alternative the the enormous flame wars at that time on the alt newsgroups.

They certainly did the job at that time.

Sadly Usenet has declined in usage over the last few years, the RIAA is
perusing ISP's world wide in a bid to cut access to Usenet as it has
become a major source of internet piracy. Certainly a very sad turn of
events in that again the criminal element takes a good technology and
effectively turns it into a sewer. That the RIAA are arguably no better
in this respect not withstanding.

It's been an interesting, varied and at times extremely stressful job
keeping these groups running. Helped enormously in recent years by my
assistant moderator Kathy Morgan who gave me a timely boot in the
backside to get them running again after I went through, what was for
me, one of the darkest times of my life with a personal health crises.
Said health crises is under control now for me for the record.

I could say quite a lot, bang on about certain events that transpired
both here and on the alt groups over the years but I'm not going to do
that here, I'll cover it in more detail in my blog rather than clutter
up the groups with this post.

This last twelve months has actually be carthetic for me. I ran for
parliament here in Australia last November, started a new company and a
new software product, still under development, and started a blog that
is now rated in the top 1.23 % at Technorati and similar resources and
is getting in the order of 10,000 visits + per month if one includes RSS
readers. But more importantly I stood back, took a long look at where
I've been, where I'm going, where I want to be and made a decision
earlier this year to devote my, now, limited time to my own business and
family as far as I possibly could.

What this means is that I upon the tenth anniversary of these
newsgroups, circa today - October 1st 2008, am resigning as moderator
for the newsgroups comp.software.shareware.authors,
comp.software.shareware.users and comp.software.shareware.announce.

Our co-moderator - Kathy Morgan - steps in effective immediately as the
primary moderator for these newsgroups.

I would like to thank Kathy for accepting this role, being passionate
about these newsgroups and Usenet - as she certainly is - and for all
her work over the years here - seen and unseen. There is a lot of work
moderators do that readers never see - even when the groups are quiet.
I trust you will give her your utmost respect and cooperation in return
for her conscientious efforts here.

To the many people, who over the years, have supported these newsgroups
and myself I would like to take the opportunity to thank you all. I
value highly your support, concern and interest and am pleased to call
many of you friends - please feel free to drop me a line anytime by email.

What all this also means is that I will be withdrawing - unsubscribed
from all public and private "shareware" newsgroups.

I have moved to other things, still software related to be sure, but
with a different approach to that of the past. An approach that is for
me essential in respect of my own goals in building a software company
as opposed to just a product. An approach that has seen me invest a
great deal of my own money and time into development of that company
this year and into the future.

Good luck in all things you all do. It's my sincere hope the economic
woes of the world do not impact on you, your families and friends and
that each of you prosper in your chosen paths.

Thank you, for the opportunity to serve you and your support over the
last ten years!!
