Since this has kind of been a topic here of late...

Well. Here we go... :)

I do think the author of the article is a little bit off when he says:
"All this proves is that these Web-based applications cannot be trusted."

I'd say:
"All this proves is that these Web-based applications from Microsoft cannot
be
trusted because Microsoft have never understood the Internet and new
Internet
technologies."

It's true that web services must be reliable or they'll definitely be a big
risk
and useless. But who would think that Microsoft should manage to run a
reliable web services? Not I.

Even Bill Gates himself says they have been late catching up with new
Internet technologies. They didn't include tcp/ip in Windows 3.11, companies
had to use 3rd party products for that. They were relatively late with
Internet Explorer and they have never been famous for introducing ground
breaking Internet technologies on the market. Just look at the latest Vista
which contains Gadgets, a crystal clear rip-off, Apple have been using
Widgets for years. Now Microsoft are copying the concept and almost
the name too.

And why aren't people talking about the risk of putting gigabytes of data on
a local disk without a backup? Many of the hard disks make use of plastic
details which break down after a couple of years. That's a risk too.
You always have to take a backup, no matter if you use a web service
or a local piece of software.

Protect your data.

But it's an interesting discussion. Web services are not ideal. But neither
are traditional applications. There are pros and cons with both.
