Let me guess: You are using WindosXP and had some automatical updates in
the last days? I've heared this the last week from several labs:
mysteriously vanishing accessability of EXE files. On some computers
matlab.exe and other programs are concerned also.

Hi Jan - interesting to hear this, but it doesn't seem to match my
situation. As I said, I've been mexing all day without incident until the
perl.exe suddenly vanished. There's been no auto-updates today that I
recall .

I fixed the problem by copying the perl.exe off of another machine. I
don't know if this is kosher however, since I took the perl.exe from an
R2008a distribution and patched it into an R2009b distribution.

Any idea whether this could lead to incompatibilities?

Potentially; I don't remember if the version of perl.exe that we use changed
between those two versions. If it did, and one of the functions in release
R2009b that uses perl uses a new feature of the newer version, then it could
break.

The fact that the executable just "vanished" makes me wonder ... did you
update your virus scanner recently? If so, check and see if it quarantined
that file -- if it did, please let Technical Support know which virus
scanner (name and version) you're using so they can report it to development
for investigation why the scanner is flagging perl.exe.

If you didn't update your virus scanner or the virus scanner didn't
quarantine the file, I'd still ask your system administrator if there were
any updates they pushed out (possibly without informing you, as "it
shouldn't have any effect on you") between the last time you were able to
successfully MEX and the first time you were not able to MEX.
