Re: JOB AVAILABLE

I see that two people tagged this as spam.

That is selfish. We posted a very similar job last month, though not on CSSM, and we received 110 resumes in 5 days. We had to stop gathering resumes early because we were inundated.

People need work these days.

Just because I may not be helping with advice does not mean that this post would not help someone.

But it is spam, at least by a broad definition.
It is advertising. It belongs in a classified ad,
where someone looking for work might seek
such information. As such, this post is not that
dissimilar to those we see daily on this group,
trumpeting solution manuals for sale by the
thousands.

Some may consider your post spam. I considered
myself whether this qualifies as spam when I first
saw your post. Hypothetically, suppose you wanted
to advertise your services as a MATLAB consultant on
this group? Would that be appropriate? Personally,
I believe it would not be appropriate, even though
you might seriously need a job. In fact, there is
one individual who frequently posts on this group
for no reason other than to advertise his wares. His
posts are often labeled as spam very quickly.

Another example might be the announcement of a
conference on MATLAB. Suppose I were to advertise
an upcoming MATBAB conference, or a MATLAB
related session at a SIAM conference? While this
would be advertising, the main purpose would not
be self-serving as the poster would have little to
gain from the ad compared to the number of people
on this group who would have an interest in reading
that ad. I'd argue this would not be spam.

So self-serving advertising, even if it is MATLAB
related, is arguably spam on this group if the poster
will gain financially from the responses. Many others
on this group will agree with my assessment.

Your post is indeed self-serving. It is obviously an
advertisement. And if you hire a person to fill your
post, then you will gain from that result. Therefore
your post is spam, at least by my definition. Is it
acceptable spam? To some extent, your post may be
of some service to an individual who knows MATLAB
and very much does need a job. These days, a job is
often hard to find, so I find it difficult to call this
spam. It is also the only reason why I did not choose
to so flag your post the other day.

On the other hand, I do not want this group to
become inundated with posts for every MATLAB
related job. There are hundreds of them out there,
and if every MATLAB job was posted here, the group
would be swamped. If you can post your ad here,
then why not the rest? Why not post ads for C or
Java programmers on this group? How about ads
for image processing grads?

I would suggest posting classified job posting ads
where they belong in the future, but not on this
group.
