If you want something other than an
avi file, I suggest you look in the File Exchange since MATLAB for
some reason doesn't seem to want to support any other video format
(why not????).

Actually, in versions 7.5 and later (R2007b), MMREADER and the associated
READ function can handle other file formats as well, and READ allows you to
specify the range of frames.
