Hi,
The MathWorks is still evaluating the Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 2 update released yesterday via Software Update. Usually, stuff just works, and once in a long while, things break unexpectedly.
We have confirmed the issues described here on comp.soft-sys.matlab affecting MATLAB regarding Editor document tab appearance, and the Command Window/Editor font size. We are confident, however, that this Java update does improve reliability and resolves other issues impacting MATLAB users.
- The MATLAB Editor document tabs button issue is something we kind-of "caused" :-(. MATLAB "disables" the default behavior of the button style used for these tabs, for the purpose of implementing the tab appearance, and this update broke our code. We have reported this to Apple, but we need to re-think our implementation. This kind of thing happens; fortunately, in this case, the impact is cosmetic.
- The Command Window and Editor font size issue is still under investigation, and we are working with Apple to try to resolve this in another java update or patch.
Please be assured:
- The MathWorks endeavors to pro-actively evaluate Apple pre-release seeds and Java developer previews provided by Apple to developers under non-disclosure agreements--as such, we can't report to you on what we know (or don't know) before Software Updates have been released, but we do work closely with Apple, and report issues to Apple. Both companies cooperate to resolve issues before they impact customers. Sometimes, the release train doesn't stop.
- Apple endeavors to pro-actively evaluate the impact of software updates on MATLAB products, and works with The MathWorks when issues are discovered, but again, sometimes the release train doesn't stop.
- On the bright side, Apple releases a lot of trains via Software Update.
Once we know more about the font issue, we will let you know. We appreciate your patience,
- Brian

Update today), hoping that it might fix the annoying MATLAB/Spaces bug
(Command+Tab won't switch to MATLAB), but instead it seems to have
changed how text renders (in the editor, command, and workspace
windows). Everything is way larger now (I'm using a 10 point font,
but I can only fit about 60 lines of text on a 1600 x 1200 monitor...
before the update around 90 fit just fine), and letters look slightly
more spaced out horizontally. It's not unusable, it just looks...
wrong. Anyone else have a similar problem/know how to change it?
For now, I've changed the default font sizes down to 8 points for everything except 'HTML Proportional Text', which is set to 12 points. It looks fairly similar to how it looked before.
MATLAB 2008a
Mac OS X 10.5.5
2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo
Java Version 1.5.0_16
Yeah, that's what I've done now as well... the really annoying bit
though is the size of the document bar... everything's become a
gigantic button now, and it's wasting tons of space. It's a real pain
to have a bunch of documents open at the same time...
Anyone who actually knows what's going on? How to fix it?
