problem using parallel computing toolbox

Matlab version: R2007b
OS: Debian Linux 4.0 AMD64
Hardware: Intel Xeon 64 bit, quad core * 2;

I am using parfor for parallel loops. I use 4 processes with local scheduler (matlabpool open 4). But by looking into the system processes, I find that all 5 (4+1) matlab processes are hanging with 0 CPU usage after less then a minute.

My question is, how can I find out what is the problem or what is the current status of the program since fprintf is suppressed the parfor loop?

Another question is does the parallel computing toolbox improve any in R2008a compared with R2007b?
