how to find Diameter of a blob in an Image

hello,
i have got a retinal image where i have got to extract the diameter of
some small regions which are darker than the background(in green
plane). I have used Matlab functions to extract the regional minima
which converts all pixels of the blobs to zero.

My problem is:
Can anyone suggest to me the code to find the Diameter using 4 or 8
connectedness.????
