matlab on debian unstable

Hello,
Since one week, I cannot start matlab from my debian unstable box (i686).
The error I received is the following:
Failed to start the Desktop: Failure loading desktop class
I have placed a strace (+/- 2MB) on this weblocation:
http://homes.esat.kuleuven.be/~dvherten/strace_matlab.out
The funny thing is that matlab also doesn't work over ssh -Y.
"matlab -nojvm" does work.
The possible faults (in debian packages) are, according to me, libc6 (glibc), java (but matlab uses its own, and I did not upgrade that) or the xserver (xorg).
Anyone else experiencing the same? Or someone knows where I should start looking for solutions?
Thank you in advance,
Dirk
