As a new user of MatLab, I am suprised at the rather poor quality of
the input and especially the output display of computations. Input is
command line only, and the 'pretty' command for output display, while
an improvement, still looks hokey, especially with complicated
symbolics. Other programs, like Maple, not only display output
beautifully in pretty print, but also include equation/matrix writers
to help the user get the input correct the first time.
For as powerful as MatLab is, I'm rather suprised at this. Is there a
reason why this area is neglected? Are there any add-on programs that
provide an improvement here?

Okay, I'll take a shot at this. I'm speaking for myself, obviously, but
I'm sure others will agree.
Yes!!!!!
Yes, there is a reason -- the experienced users don't want it. MATLAB,
even though it offers an interface to Maple is not Maple, it's a
programming language. You complain that input is command line only yet
that is exactly what I would prefer. I am completely not interested in
having to use the mouse to enter my computations -- that sort of thing
is not really suited to anything more than a few equations and is
completely inappropriate for programming. All IMO, of course.
Well said, Doug.
There is no requirement that all users must be
happy with the same set of tools.
If you are looking for a different interface, then
you may prefer other tools out there. Perhaps one
of MathCad, Mathematica, or Maple will be more to
your liking. Personally, I had no use for MathCad
when I used it some years ago. But I gave my copy
to a friend, and he loved it.
