Row labels in uitable

Hello,
I would like to change the row labels displayed by uitable from the
generic 1..n with more informative text labels. Does anyone know how
to do that, or if it is even possible?
Alternatively, I can display those labels as the first column, but
then I want to freeze that column such that it doesn't scroll when
the other columns scroll horizontally.
Any ideas/examples are greatly appreciated!
Thank you!
Julia
