Functions that will not run

I am sure that this has been covered, so if someone can point me to a
thread I will gladly read it.

I have a function that sits in a directory that is at the top of the
search path.

When I type:

>>help butter

I get the correct help info from that file.

When I try to run it from the command line or from another m file, I
get this:

>> butter
??? Undefined function or variable 'butter'.

>>

Any idea what I am doing wrong?
