Help regarding GUI for images

Hi,
I am creating a GUI for our lab to display the images in it. For
displaying the images I have created an axes object. But I am also
thinking of changing the cursor to a crosshair when ever the mouse
pointer lies in the axes region and also to incorporate zoom option
for the image. The zoom option should work in the way that the
actual image resolution should retain all the time (since I am
storing the pixel co-ordinates whenever the user clicks on a
particular pixel). I would be great if anyone can help me out with
suggestions on how to implement the above functionalities.
thanks in advance,
-Pav
