The spam doesn't look "too bad" to me in terms of the absolute
number of posts (dismissing for the moment the fact that any and all
spam is bad), but spam makes up about half the posts because of the
fact that legitimate posts are so dissapointingly few. I agree, Usenet
is still a (technically) very viable medium for forums, but many
newsgroups have so little traffic thesedays.

Once upon a time, any ISP would include a news feed with the basic subscription.

Given the volume and preponderance of porn in the binary groups, and the increased likelihood of prosecution for kiddie porn xmission (unwitting or otherwise), it appears that usenet feeds have been relegated to 2nd and 3rd tier providers, on a fee basis. Sadly, this has affected the overall quality of usenet, even for text based, and potentially useful groups.

This has had a deleterious effect upon a useful and venerable medium for exchange of thought and ideas, and sadly, this particular group is one which I found quite valuable, as it attracted some brilliant people. The forum web site approach I find awkward to use, prone to advertising, and
a much higer noise to signal ratio.

The solution? To simply convince all the former contributors to come back to this group. Come on, guys. You know you *WANT* to 8-) ... why else would you be reading this??
