I've seen and bitched about this problem for almost 10 years. On this board!
it usually manifests, in my experience, as lines of pixels not chunks. "most of the time" the file will go to imagesetter just fine. The chances of it going wrong are greatly enhanced by importing the PDF into Quark/Corel/wherever than postscripting from there. Transparency might make the matter odder.
I have seen the problem with Corel Draw and other PCX apps, with various mac apps, with Global Graphics' JAWS and with Distiller (less often, far less often,. with JAWS). When I first started to complain about this on this board years ago, I was usually told "it is Corel's fault"...but I would respond that6 I get the same from Qualr and even adobe apps.
Sent Dov samples several times. tried calling Adobe Tech (no)Support on my Service Bureau subscription. They couldn't even understand what I was talking about. (that's when I realized that Adobe TS was about the same as asking your average 3rd grader!)
The real problem is when the files need work...RGB "B&W" photos needing to be greyscale *which i get a LOT!--and if indexed RGB, Pshop usually won't allow edit image.).
Sometimes regenerating the PDF works But not if that's all you have. I do not think I've ever tried printing to PS then redistilling, but I don't think that will work because I think the problem is in how the underlying PostScript was generated...and I think most all PDF export schemes convert to Postscript then to PDF.
I thought I'd seen in Acrobat 8 a tool to "recombine image" but I just looked (albeit in a pdf that had no images) and could not find it. I don't know what effect this tool might have (if it is not an imagination thing on my part).
I have not seen this issue for a year or maybe two now
FWIW
Right on Mac. I got a four files the other day to produce some digitally printed stickers for a major car manufacturer. Each of the PDF files had bitmaps that were broken up into thousands of single line bitmap images each one pixel high by the width of the image. The files had to be extracted and worked on. Corel's bitmap editor (photopaint) combined them without noticable loss.
Why did I have to extract them? to remove bleed, crop marks, denso scales etc and prepare them for printing on a reel to reel digital printer.
