I have found that I get a nicer end result by scanning in grayscale,
increasing the contrast in Photoshop dramatically, and then converting
to bitmap. Another benefit of starting with grayscale is that you can
rotate the image (in case it wasn't perfectly straight on the platen
when scanned), whereas you can't do that in bitmap mode (at least in
Photoshop 7, but maybe there's a way to do it of which I'm not aware).
