Saving to CD/R vs CE/r/w

I recently got a larger external usb type maxtor one touch drive.
It did'nt require an install disk to activate it, as it had
all the necessary setup stuff in file already on the Maxtor Dr.
It did say it would be wise to copy those files on the Maxtor to
a CD just in case of need to get the maxtor restored.
So I tried the "sent to " cmd and sent each file to an empty
logical drive "F" on my winxppro HD on the laptop. It worked
fine. The problem was I then put a Cd/r disk into my external
backpack burner which is Drive "E": and tried the send to cmd
from F: to E: but it balked and could'nt recognize the disk in
the E: burner. So I replaced the CD/R with a CD/Rw and it
automatically recognized the burner (E:) and "send to cmd worked".
Seems to me that i remember in Roxio you were offered a chance
to format a dc/r disk for either music or Data files but I could not
find that option hence changed to a CD/RW and It seemed to sense
that "Data" was coming in and worked okay. Did'nt the original
ROXIO offer an initial screen to format a CD/r for data or
music??
