cd-rom not recognized properly

I have install a new DVD writer but the drive is not recognised properly. It
reports:
This device is not working because windows cannot load the drivers required
for this device. (Code 31)
it does however realise the device is there.
This is a Windows 2000 PC and a single device set as Master. I have tried
the following.
1
A different drive which also reports the same problem
2
Deleting the drive and allowing windows to find the drive
again.
3
Checking that the device is found in the BIOS. It is.
4
Deleting the secondary IDE channel and allowing windows to find it again. It
did.
5
Trying the drive as slave on the other IDE channel. Same error.
6
Identifying the drivers that the device uses and replacing them from
downloads of the Internet. (All drivers ostensibly OK for Windows 2000)
Drivers replaced cdrom.sys, redbook.sys, storprop.dll.
7
A friend of mine also had the additional driver imap.sys which I also copied
to the SYSTEM/DRIVERS folder
I would be very grateful if anyone has any suggestions for a solution to
this problem. THANK YOU in
advance for any suggestions.
Robbie
