How far away? I am in Vienna ~590 km away from Frankfurt and get nice signals through 70 cm thick walls out of old fashioned solid bricks, and my office is in the basement, the buildings around are 5 floors high.

Near to the window does not necessarily improve signal quality. For the far away (~1400 km) MSF (Rugby, UK) I get only a constant signal in one room without windows to the west (where the signal comes). The best signal is in the middle of the room, 3 m away from the walls, 2 m upon the floor, 1.6 m from the ceiling.

In a building out of steel and concrete going through the window may be better. But at long wave being away from bad materials seems more important than not having them in the line.

Even I need a minimum distance of 20 cm between my antennas, because they would disturbe themselfs otherwise. In my case this was a problem, to find enough space on the wall for 7 antennas;-)
