Re: Domain Time II/alternative software

Derek,

I took a look at the product brochure. First, it is intended for Windows systems, specifically domains with lots of servers and clients. It claims conformance with rfc1769, which has been obsoleted for years, but then the protocol hasn't changed much. As the intervals between sending packets are set bia the GUI, I assume the servers and clients use simple RPC protocols and don't include the fance adaptive NTPv4 algorithms.

It does provide centralized management functions and the usual things a NCC would need in a large dispersed network. The GUI is certainly better than the ntpd command line and configuration file. All in all, if I were running an empire with 30,000 servers and clients and PCs (General Telephone), I might really rather like to have this product running on the Windows domains. HOwever, big businesses I know of seem to favor Unix or IBM server/mainframes and lots of little Windows domains. Windows domain controllers already have pseudo-NTP synchronization.

Now, on a related issue, I don't know for sure if all NTP-in-a-box appliances have simply rehosted the public distribution, but the TrueTime and EndRun boxes certainly have, and for the others if you raise the hood, Mickey Mouse pops out and whispers L-i-n-u-x.

Hi all,

Other than the fact that it isn't free, what is the difference between
Domain Time II software by Symmetricom, and the NTP Daemon v4.2.0a from
ntp.org.

Have you guys heard of this software? What's the general concensus?
Would you consider using it in a large scale network, or is NTPD much
more preferred?

This software offers a free 30 day trial, and has a pretty good Windows
GUI.

PS. Thanks to everyone for the responses to my recent questions, it's
all been very helpful.
