This will definitely work
Do modern Ultra160 drives generally have the ability to fall
back to work on a single-ended, narrow bus? I need more
space and would like to buy a SCSI drive that will work with
my old systems today, but give me the ability to upgrade my
computer (or at the very least my host bus adaptor) later to
take advantage of the new drive's speed.
Any thoughts or recommendations?
(with a narrow to wide convertor plus a LVD/SE terminator).
But hardly cost effective.
Have a look at ebay what a 2940U2 or 2940U2W controller costs.
Some even come with the terminated cable thrown in, like this one:

You will still gain some benefit from the drives modern
performance (higher rpm etc).
If you have a busy server.
