Whats happened is that you have not loaded the correct drivers and are using the default Microsoft ones that come windows XP.

Go to the device manager and uninstall the scanner. or update drivers and direct it to your install CD.

You will have to force the installation to use the canon drivers.

If that does not work try using install using Add Hardware in the control panel. Let it search for new hardware etc and load off the CD etc.
