One thing you can be sure of, the Canon does a better job, so what, if it is
mostly plastic?
You use it until it dies, then give it a nice funeral.
I also still have an old SCSI scanner, I keep it because it can scan up to a
5" X 7" transparency. The max size transparency the Canon 8400F will do is
120 film.
It is a little hard to install a SCSI driver in Windows XP, but it can be
done.
Mostly because the old scanners don't have updated software.

Well, I'd much rather have a scanner that would hold up over
time, as opposed to one that will wear out because of plastic gears
and bearings. If that means spending $1,000 for a well built scanner
as opposed to $300 for one that uses a lot of plastic, I'll buy the
$1,000 scanner. There's nothing worse that having a scanner die on
you in the middle of a scan, over the weekend.<g>
My ScanMaker III is supposed to work with Win XP if I use WIN NT
drivers. I tried that but every so often I'd get a error message and
I had to shut down PhotoShop and restart the computer. After a while,
it got to be bothersome so I just bought another scanner.
I agree, they don't bother to update the drivers for the older
equipment. I still like my ScanMaker III, but it's relegated to the
shelf gathering dust.
