Question for Don - Scan Twice

I read you message in another thread where you say you scan your slides
twice - once for highlights and once for shadows. After scanning you
combine the scans into one. Will you explain your method for doing the
scans and for combining the scans. I use a Coolscan IV for scanning with
Nikonscan 4 software. My editor is Photoshop Elements 3.
