I'll look and see if it prints in both directions, but as you indicate
this sounds like a hardware problem that is not economical to repair.
we had the printer several years.

The printer does print bidirectionaly. There are a couple of easy things to check: first clean the encoder strip as shown here: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=bpd50646 Be sure to heed the warnings, the strip is fragile and can be easily damaged if not cleaned properly.

Secondly, this printer has an automatic alignment sensor. If this gets coated with ink aerosol or otherwise dirty it could cause a problem. The sensor is located in a small black plastic protrusion near the right rear of the carriage. Use a damp Q-tip to clean the underside of this sensor. I think you can force an alignment from the driver toolbox, or if not try the following: turn on the printer. Now press and hold the power button. While holding in the power button press the formfeed button three times, then release the power button.

This should print an alignment page. If the last lines has a green checkmark the alignment has been successful, a red X indicates a failure.
