Network printer setup question

I have a small home network, set up using a 3 Com wireless router as a DHCP
server (part wired, part wireless). Network was running OK with two HP
laserjets. I have just added a Dell Colour Laser and have generally mucked
things up.

I sort of half understand what's going on, but can anyone suggest a book or
a web page which will explain whether I should use auto or manual IP
settings, etc? I'd also be interested in any simple software to check the
network. I know about IPCONFIG and PING, and the router will give me a list
of DHCP clients but this isn't showing the two HP printers which I've
currently got in manual IP settings (presumably they aren't regarded as DHCP
clients?)

TIA
