Brother 1440 printer not suddenly changes printed font.

After troubleshooting the printer for a problem (ie disconnecting,
cleaning, reconnecting, and opening and closing the paper tray) I
realized that the alarm lights indicated a low cartridge. Installed
new cartridge. Meanwhile I had teporarily set the computer's default
printer for one on the network (brother 1440 was initially default
printer). I then reconnected the Brother printer and set it to default
printer again. Prints a test page fine, but when printing ascii
documents (a program called HP Chemstation) all text printed correctly
but the tabs / spaces seem to be out of alignment (The spacing of text
on the page should yeild a nice columned format). Also the font is
different different (not fixed-width like before). I figured this
might be a computer issue, so I printed to the network printer and the
printout was fine. I have been inside and out of the printer
"properties" as well as the "printer defaults" in the WINNT printers
folder to no avail. I have seen similar issues with another
non-brother printer before with this particular software, but why it
would print fine to a network printer and not to a local printer is
beyond me. Your help is appreciated.
