and cartridges? I've had really bad experience with Epsons because of
the way the printer heads are constantly drying up. Since I hardly
print in color (maybe once every few months?), I found that most of my
color ink was used in head cleaning rather than actual printing. And
I've long suspected that my Epson Stylus was chipped to prevent use of
cartridges that still had ink in it. Needless to say, I'd rather not
have these same problems with my next printer.
Both of these printers have ink cartridges so tiny, that unless you
only print three pages a week, you'll be buying new ink twice a month.
You should at least go one step up and get the Canon MP500 ($150-170)
if you want an all in one. There are a few HP all in ones in the same
price range that takes a large black cartridge, but still takes the
microscopic color cartridge. The first HP that takes both the 96 and
97 tanks is $350.
I would reccomend giving up color and going with a black and white
laser, but since the 1510 is a multifunction printer, I'm not sure
whether you need that or not. If you don't need the multifunction,
there are a few HP deskjets in the $100 range that take big ink tanks,
as well as the Canon iP4200.
HPs with the tri-color tank and regular black produce decent
photographs. For the high quality ones, you can get a photo color tank
in place of the black that has light cyan, light magenta, and photo
black. The Canon MP500 or iP4200 have separate ink colors and two
blacks, photo and pigment. From what I've seen, the Canon 3-color with
photo black looks better than the HP 3-color with the regular black
tank (but not as good as if you get the photo tank for the HP).
