i guess the people who do not want to spend $20 at the dealor for an oil change on their car are the onces who change their own oil and refill their own carts.

I think I'd actually tend to agree with you here!

For people who (1) don't feel the printer manufacturer's cartridges are either worth the price or

i do not feel they are worth the price either

(2) simply don't have the money to buy them, refilling makes perfect sense, just as changing your own oil does if you don't think paying someone else to do it is worth it or simply can't afford to do so.

it costs $20.00 at the dealer to get your oil changed and if you do it yourself it costsalmost $15.00 plus the initial cost of the equipment. the right choice is a no brainer.

Statistically I think it's difficult to argue that, say, some college kid with a Pixma 4000 comes out ahead monetary by *not* refilling.

that depends on how much he prints. and how fast he gets a clogged printhead.

I'll even accept that statistically there's a greater chance the printheads could become clogged or the printer otherwise be damaged (greater than when using OEM supplies), but refilling cartridges or using third-party cartridges over the span of the thousands of pages a student typically prints during a 4 year college degree will still save many hundreds of dollars *on average*.

there are very few students who will print that much over a period of 4 years and they should have a b/w laser printer.

(Canon black tank prices for that printer are something like $12 each... reputable third party tanks are something like $3!)

costco prices are $9.00 a tank. so a student may use 3 tanks a year and risk his printhead for $18.00. you cannot even go out on a date for that.
