Dipping the MIS black into water does not have the same effect that the
photo black (dye) does. The photo black mixes easily where the "black"
acts as like a big dark cloud that falls to the bottle of the water.
This leads me to believe that it's pigment, but by all means ask them.

Keep in mind that the ip3000 from what i've served uses a composite
black (cyan magenta yellow mixed) if the content of a page, even text,
contains one color in it. I.e. if you had a word in blue, the printer
would print the whole bleeding thing using three colors to make black.
It's food for thought, the ip4000 has the dedicated black. I don't
know if hitting "print in grey scale only" has an effect on it.
In the past canon offered a pure black tank, i.e. a combo printhead and
huge 50+ml black tank. But alas that hasn't been an option for years.
