Dear TCPP member,
I am happy to announce that the inaugural TCPP Outstanding Service Award
goes to Professor Viktor Prasanna, University of Southern California! The
awards committee was chaired by Professor Arnold Rosenberg, University of
Massachusetts, Amherst, and had distinguished membership of Rajkumar Buyya,
Michel Cosnard, Jack Dongarra, Jose Fortes, Allan Gottlieb, Geppino Pucci,
Assaf Schuster, Behrooz Shirazi, Jie Wu, and Albert Zomaya. As you know,
Professor Prasanna has a long career of enabling high-quality research on
parallel and distributed processing - Founder of TCPP, Leader of
International Parallel & Distributed Processing Symposium (IPDPS) and
International Conference on High Performance Computing (HiPC),
Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Computers, too many to name. The
committee restricted itself to just one award this year to highlight his
unique contributions. We will formally present the award at the next IPDPS
in Miami. Congratulations Viktor!
An updated set of instructions for TCPP PhD Forum at IPDPS 2008 is now
available at http://www.ipdps.org/ipdps2008/2008_phdforum.html with a
two-page abstract deadline of January 15, 2008. A primary intent is for
students at their proposal stage to get feedback on their research agenda
from the community experts. More advanced students will also benefit: both
from steering and validation of their research direction and results, and
from networking with expert audience from industry and academia. The
research area of interest is broad enough to accommodate all the TCPP
sponsored/co-sponsored conference topics. TCPP will give out a number of
travel awards to support the students. I encourage PhD students to avail
themselves of this new opportunity.
In this newsletter, we have created a separate section for the TCPP
sponsored/co-sponsored and related events for you to get timely and brief
updates on their upcoming deadlines/extensions as well as their current
activities. This section is followed by the calendar of announcements
submitted in the past several weeks to TCPP-announce@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Regards,
Sushil

Call for Proposals
==============
- NSF Expeditions in Computing (Expeditions)
A new NSF CISE program called "Expeditions in Computing" (Expeditions)
provides the opportunity for the computing research community to pursue
ambitious, compelling, and transformative research agendas that promise
disruptive innovations in the computing and information fields. Funded at
levels up to $2,000,000 per year for five years, awarded projects are
expected to explore far-reaching research and education activities motivated
by hard problems and/or compelling applications. Teams of investigators
from within or across departments or institutions are encouraged to combine
their expertise and talents to forge well-integrated research appropriate
for the Expeditions program. More information about Expeditions is
available at http://nsf.gov/pubs/2007/nsf07592/nsf07592.htm. Note the
following deadlines: a Letter of Intent was due November 5, 2007, and the
Preliminary Proposal is due December 30, 2007. It is estimated that only 20
collaborating teams will be invited to submit a full proposal due on April
1, 2008, with only 3 of those proposals anticipated for award.
- NSF Cyber-Enabled Discovery and Innovation (CDI) The NSF has just
announced its newest multidisciplinary, multi-year initiative:
"Cyber-Enabled Discovery and Innovation (CDI)." CDI aims to create
revolutionary science and engineering research outcomes made possible by
innovations and advances in "computational thinking." Computational thinking
is defined comprehensively as computational concepts, methods, models,
algorithms, and tools. Applied in challenging science and engineering
research and education contexts, computational thinking promises a profound
impact on the Nation's ability to generate and apply new knowledge.
Collectively, CDI research outcomes are expected to produce paradigm shifts
in our understanding of a wide range of science and engineering phenomena
and socio-technical innovations that create new wealth and enhance the
national quality of life. For additional information about CDI, including
frequently asked questions, please refer to
http://www.nsf.gov/crssprgm/cdi. Examples of motivating science
and/or engineering research and education
opportunities can also be found there. This list is provided for purposes of
illustration only; it is neither exhaustive, nor indicative of preference
regarding research areas.

Enrique Alba
ISBN: 0-471-67806-6
Hardcover
576 pages
September 2005
This book includes both sequential and parallel descriptions and
applications of most metaheuristic techniques. Every chapter introduces the
basic technique, defines the possible parallel extensions, and illustrates
the application in real scenarios (not simply benchmarking).
A large amount of applications are solved in the book, from the fields of
combinatorial optimization, telecommunications, bioinformatics, and many
others. Researchers looking for new advanced techniques able of improving
the present state of the art will found in this book a large number of
techniques to do so (not only parallelism, but also hybridization,
constraint satisfaction, etc.).
