Re: U320 SCSI Drive on U160 Controller

Hi!

I am using a U320 drive (Cheetah 15k) on a U2W controller.
Firstly the drive was connected to a UW controller (Symbios). From my point of view the even change to U2W did not bring any remarkable performace enhancement.
The most important parameter, the access time, is not affected by the interface speed at all.

Only disk to disk transfers from one to another physical disk will profit from higher interface speeds. But as Trevor said, the PCI bus is the limiting factor. Only a few boards will allow more than 80MB/s sustained data rate on the PCI bus. And usually the data have to pass the PCI bus twice, even if the other device is not attached to the same controller.

In general U320 have completely no advantage against U160 controllers on
32 bit PCI architectures. And U160 controllers have nearly no advantages against U2W controllers for the same reasons. Only 64 bit PCI architectures will profit significantly.

The high interface rates are mainly designed for disk arrays where several disks share the bandwidth and are usually accessed simultanously.
