I looked back in my archives, and as far as I can reconstruct, on my machine, I wound up booting OS/2 from a bootable CD and using PKZip to backup the restore partition, then deleted it. Later, after getting OS/2 installed, I put it back. On my daughter's machine, I think I just disabled the restore partition in the CMOS setup. At one point on my machine, I accidentally destroyed the Windows C drive and I tried to run the restore partition from BM. It seemed to work but the restoration was incomplete and left a minimal windows system. To get it to work properly, the restore partition needs to be reenabled. (There is a CMOS setup option to reenable it on my daughter's T22, but on mine a special restore floppy from IBM was needed to reactivate it.) I wasn't able to find a record of what I disabled in the CMOS setup, but before I did whatever I did (it may have been something to do with boot virus protection), any attempt to change partitioning using either LVM or DFSEE seemed to work while the program was running but actually did nothing to the disk. Windows and/or the BIOS was somehow preventing LVM and DFSEE making changes to the partition table. Whatever is necessary seems to be BIOS dependent. I did different things on my daughter's machine than I did on my own, and when I helped Ted Edwards set up his T23's we had to do different things yet, and the two T23's were slightly different as well. All of this was over a year ago and my memory of it is getting a bit fuzzy.

The other problem I had was trying to free up enough space for BM and OS/2. DFSEE couldn't shrink the factory installed partitions very much even though they were nearly empty because windows seems to scatter unmovable stuff all over the place. The best I could do after defragging in windows was reduce the original C drive to 75% or its original size even though it was only about 15% occupied.

In the end, once I got OS/2 working and its FAT32 driver installed, I zipped up the Windows C drive using PKZip, deleted the windows partition (14GB), created a 3GB partition, "formatted" it using F32BLANK and DFSEE, and restored the zip. At first windows wouldn't boot but my son figured out that by moving BM to the beginning of the disk when I reorganized it, I had changed the logical number of the windows C drive and a file (on the C drive) needed to be edited to enable windows to boot from the C drive!

If I had been prescient, I could have done most of this at the beginning from the bootable CD. At the time I think that I felt that trying to shrink the partition was controversial enough.

That freed up 11GB of space and still left windows 3 times the space I give to OS/2.

If I recall, this had to do with memory mapping on some systems with OS/2 2.0 (or maybe it was 1.0). If present it should be turned off with recent versions of OS/2.

I have never found it necessary to mess with that.
