On the other hand, is it possible to install OS/2 Warp 4 to a IBM
thinkpad? The reason I am asking this is because the first part of the
install seems to be floppy and the second part cd-rom. This poses a
problem that I can either have the cdrom drive or the floopy inserted,
no both at the same time. Is there a process in creating a bootable
cdrom for the first 3 floppies?
There are several ways to do it, although they all involve a fair amount
of work.
You can create a bootable installation CD... you may want to Google for
'UpdCD' and/or 'BootAble' for information on that option.
Alternatively, you can do the install by copying the product image
from the CD onto the hard drive beforehand.
The following is excerpted from the ThinkPad 760el user's guide. It
applies to Warp 3, but I think it would probably work for Warp 4 as well.
I've marked my own editorial changes with ***.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Installing OS/2 Warp Using the Internal CD-ROM and Diskette Drive
Note:
The following terms are used in these instructions:
[cd:] Your CD-ROM drive letter, followed by a colon
[c:] Target hard disk drive letter, followed by a colon
1
*** For Warp 4 you'll need three blank diskettes. Use these to create ***
*** copies of the three OS/2 installation diskettes. Use these copies ***
*** for all subsequent steps referring to the installation diskettes. ***
*** You'll probably need about 400 MB of hard disk space above and ***
*** beyond what OS/2 itself will require. (You can free it up later.) ***
2 Insert the OS/2 Warp CD-ROM into the internal CD-ROM drive.
3 Open the DOS command prompt; then enter the following to copy all the
diskette images from the OS/2 Warp CD-ROM to the hard disk drive (do not
type the [ ] brackets):
xcopy [cd:]\os2image\ . [c:]\os2image\ . /s
*** copy [cd:]\diskimgs\os2\35\*.dsk [c:]\os2image ***
*** If you're short on disk space, you can skip or delete the ***
*** \OS2IMAGE\DEBUG tree. ***
4 Shut down OS/2 and turn off the computer.
5 Replace the CD-ROM drive with the diskette drive
6
*** You can do the following on another computer, or on the ThinkPad ***
*** if you have an OS on it already. ***
After the OS/2 Warp Diskette 1 diskette has been created, open
the CONFIG.SYS file on the diskette and find the following line:
set os2_shell=sysinst2.exe
Change this line to:
set os2_shell=sysinst2.exe [c:]\os2image
Save the CONFIG.SYS file.
7 Install OS/2 Warp as follows:
a) With the OS/2 Warp Installation Diskette ... inserted in the
diskette drive, (re)start your computer
b) Follow the instructions on the screen; however, pay attention to
the following during installation:
Select VGA as the Primary Display at the System Configuration
screen.
Select IDE CD-ROM for the CD-ROM at the System Configuration
screen.
Note:
Because your CD-ROM drive is not yet installed in the computer and
cannot be recognized automatically by OS/2 Warp, you need to make
OS/2 Warp recognize the CD-ROM drive.
c) When OS/2 Warp installation is complete, shut down OS/2 and turn
off the computer.
d) Replace the diskette drive with the CD-ROM drive; then turn on the
computer.
The previous steps leave about 45MB (*** a lot more than that ***) of
image files on your hard disk drive. You can leave these files for future
reinstallations, or you can remove them to save hard disk space:
8 Clean up (optional).
a) Open the OS/2 System folder; then open the Drives folder.
b) Open [c:] drive; then click on the OS2IMAGE folder with the right
mouse button to bring up the folders menu.
c) Click on the Delete menu.
When you are asked to confirm deletion, select Yes.
