Once again you ignore the whole problem statement.

Of course I do. I address only one HALF of the problems you expose by
your posting: your broken shell, thus your broken assumptions about
how a shell SHOULD behave.

I'm making no statement about your gethostbyname() (or whatever) part
of the problem.
