Hey guys,
I've been out of the loop where as OS/2-Ecomstation is concerned.
What's been going on?
I'd like some feedback on the AGP motherboard thing.
I'm looking to upgrade my Pentium 3 1ghz AGP based system. (yeah, I
know pretty old)
Which mobo based CPU would be better to go with Amd or Intel?
I've looked at what AGP 8X based boards that I could find. I copied the below from one of the homebuilt newsgroup.
AMD AM2/Am2+
---------------
Asrock Alivedual-eSata2
Asrock AM2NF3-VSTA
MSI K9MM-V
MSI K8M800
INTEL LGA 775
---------------
Asrock 775V88+
Asrock 4coredual-sata2
Asrock cor2dual
Foxconn 648X7M
would appreciate any tips on it.
btw, I'm aware of the issue with the AGP standard, so please don't rag
on me about moving on to the PCI-e o PCI-X thing.
This is for my OS/2 machine I already got the BFG Geforce 7300GT AGP
card. I got it when I thought the card was going bad, but it turned to
be the a minor problem with the monitor. A good whack on the Planar
monitor with a check book restored the color and resolution.
I am going to be building a new machine that will be on the PCI-E/PCI-X
platform. Ir ia going to be Windows based and for primarily playing
games. Just don't know what CPU the mobo will be running on. That is
dependent on what cpu is chosen for the OS/2 machine.
what I'd like to have is both Intel & AMD based systems.
That is in addition to the laptop I'm getting rather soon.
I suggest going to:
http://en.ecomstation.ru/hardware.php
and review the information there. As for using an AGP card, you will
be very lucky to find a new motherboard, with an AGP slot to put it
in. Most (if not all) new boards come with a choice of PCI, or PCI-e.
Many new boards have the NIC, sound, and the Video adpaters all built
in. Some NICs work good with the GENMAC wrapper. Most video adapters
work with Panorama, and many will work, in VESA 2.0 mode, with SNAP
(usually, relatively slow). Many new sound chips are supported by
UniAud, although that is an ongoing battle, and you will, likely, need
one of Paul Smedley's custom built versions. Also, you will likely
need eCS 2.0 (still in Release Candidate status), to be able to
install eCS to a modern system, without doing a LOT of work.
FWIW, I am using an Asus M3A78-EM motherboard, AMD Phenom quad core
processor, and 2 GiB of memory, with pretty good success. My brother
has the same board, but has an AMD Phenom triple core processor. ACPI
sort of works, with limits, but it also works, with limits, with the
old APM support.
I also HAD an Acer Aspire 4720 laptop. It seemed to work well, EXCEPT
for the NICs. The wireless just would not work, even though it is
supposed to be supported by GENMAC. The wired NIC would work with
GENMAC, in UNSUPPORTED mode, but only if I didn't use ACPI support
(APM support doesn't work either, which isn't very good, for a
laptop). There were also a few peripherals that don't have any support
in eCS, and likely never will. I gave that beast to my sister, who
needs a laptop with windows, and not eCS.
Hope this helps...
