The new Windows Vista writes DVDs and CDs with a new Windows-only format called "live file" format that cannot be read by non-Windows systems. Vista defaults to the "live file" format with an easy drag-and-drop interface. It is possible to create what vista calls a "universal" cd or dvd but vista users cannot make that the default and have to manually select it every time they burn a cd. What all of this means is that we OS/2 users are going to be seeing more and more cds and dvds written with the live file format that we will not be able to read. I think Microsoft did this to screw Apple users but OS/2 and linux users get swept up with it as well.
This not a problem with just Vista. This has been around since at least XP (maybe Millenium). It is more specifically a compatibility problem with Windows Media. Since about ver 8. I have had several people ask me why their CD's and DVD's won't play in their cars or DVD players. I tell them DO NOT USE WINDOWS MEDIA to create your disks. Use another product to burn your disks.
