hey all..

found my PC's OS/2 desktop frozen. so I rebooted.

found that boot manager will not boot up.

found that LVM driver order is screwed up.

using DIR, can't access the C: drive where OS/2 resides.

tried chkdsk /f the C: drive. finds bunch of errors in HPFS C: drive and presumbly fixes them.

tried again with DIR, got same message.

tried running chkdsk /f again,. but got a different message saying data cannot be recovered...., back up your data before you proceed or something like that.

Also found that I cannot access any other drive (9 gig, 18 gig & 250 gig) save for one 2 gig hard drive.

does it sound like the LVM boot record got trashed?

If by hard drive, you mean partition or volume, then yes. Try Dfsee to fix, if possible. But by hard drive, you mean physical devices, then it would sound like main board or ide add-on card has problems.

the drives are scsi.

got the os/2 computer back up. its weird.. just noticed that the 877 meg toshiba drive showed up in lvm (it sort of appeared but couldn't do anything with it in lvm) and fouled up the drive order with the cd/dvd-rom with a drive letter it shared

can the computer or hard drive be overheating to cause this type of crash?

Yes.

Open the case and check cpu, case and any other fans fitted are clean, unclogged and working correctly.

The problem could also be caused by drive failure, controller failure, power supply failure - or a combination thereof.

All of the above have "bitten" me at some point in time over the years; the "clean up the fans, replace faulty fan(s)" being the nice cheap version of the problem - hope that is all in your case.

the CPU fan, 2 small case fans and power supply fan are fine, they are spinning. It may well be an over heating issue caused by not having enough fans inside the case and lack of cool airflow. the tower has room for 4 additonal fans, 1 large rear fan and 3 small front fans located where the hard cage is located.

if I get the additional fans, should I invert the large fan at the rear case to suck hot air out or should it be used to cool the case internally?

currently the tower case fan set up is this 2 small rear fans suck hot air out of the case, the power supply fan cools the power supply.

isn't there some OS/2 utility or hardware that tells me what case internal temp is at?

or is it time to get a new scsi card? its kinda hard to tell.

I did have a crash not too long ago, last month or so I think?

with regard to config.sys errors.

sys1718 in MDOS directory on vapm.sys, vcdrom.sys, vcom.sys

Look in the below mentioned FOUND directory for missing files - or, sometimes, parts of missing files...

then sys1200, cannot create dos environment, code 0002
dos cannot be started

what do you make of this?

Some of the DOS files are missing therefore DOS cannot be started - see above.

also in the found directory, it contains what appears to be a installed features directory plus its subdirectories. I think it goes somewhere in the boot drive

Sounds like the contents of this directory:-

[BootDrive]:\OS2\INSTALL\Installed Features

Hope the above is of help.

Pete

It looks like minor parts of OS/2 got hosed. the dos session won't start and its missing some dos drivers and possibly others. I'm amazed that the lastest crash didn't trash the entire os.

I'm going to have to refresh it.
