Re: Which model thinkpads work best with OS2?

A slightly different question to the one I posted before.

What's the best models of Thinkpads that work with OS2? Model A21p, A21m, or 600E, 390, 560X, I series? Any personal recommendations are fine.

The T4x series are actually supported for OS/2 so they will be easiest to install it on. I've had a T40 running OS/2 (and Win XP) for a couple of years and it's been great. The internal LAN adapter, video, USB ports, PCMCIA slots, CDRW-DVDROM drive, keyboard volume controls, and wireless card all work fine with OS/2 drivers. The only thing that does not work in OS/2 is the internal modem but I have a Xircom card modem that works okay when a modem is needed, which is pretty seldom nowadays since most hotels offer either wireless internet or plugin lan internet. If I were you, I'd get a T43 Thinkpad if they are still available new, otherwise maybe a T42 used. One caveat, it's a little tricky to get OS/2 and Windows XP installed together on the thinkpad with boot manager but it can be done and after they are installed, you will probably never have to do it again. If you just want OS/2 by itself, it's easy to install but a little time consuming to install all of the drivers after the os has been installed. Again, though, you only have to do it once.

One caveat: The GUI thinkpad utility program only runs on Windows XP, now, although it ran on OS/2 in earlier thinkpads. That's the program that turns ports on and off, configures the hardware, and stuff. A lot of that can be done before the OS boots, though, with a bios-like program. Also, IBM has a text-mode DOS program that you can run on os/2 to do that as well, although its awkward to use. Generally, configuration is something you will probably do very rarely so it's probably not a big deal to you.
