Re: How to install USB printer? (Was: New inkjet printer wanted)

Update --

Good news:
I was able to install this USB printer after installing a USB printer port. I used the Omni driver for a Canon i950.

Bad news:
It does not work with this driver, nor with the i850 driver. I tried to
print a one-page .lwp file from Lotus WordPro, but what appeared was a page with a very small number of correct letters, a lot of white space, and a few very isolated black pixels that are positioned where the lines
of text should have been. This was the case with both of these drivers.

Looking at the Canon blurb on the iP5000
http://www.canon.co.uk/For_Home/Product_Finder/Printers/Bubble_Jet/PIXMA_iP5000/

and iP5200
http://www.canon.co.uk/For_Home/Product_Finder/Printers/Bubble_Jet/PIXMA_iP5200/

they look to be exactly the same with the exception of the "ChromaLife100 system" part of the iP5200.

I had similar output from a newly installed USB printer once.

Turned out the answer was to make sure that the necessary USB printer bits were installed and USBPRT Auto Monitor (aka [BootDrive]:\os2\usbmon.exe parameter USBPRT) was active.

Then install the printer by plugging in the lead and letting the system find the printer and then run through the printer driver installation.

Not sure why the previous method had failed unless I forgot something at the time... it may be that when I turned the printer on a second usb port was created for the printer so output was misdirected although partially successful.

If the above does not help: Might be worth emailing canon support and asking if the print engine will work with the i850/i950 drivers - sometimes you get a response from someone who knows or takes the trouble to find out.

Regards

Pete

My Canon Pixma iP5200 arrived this afternoon, and I installed it under Win2k using the CD-ROM that came with it. It works.

Now I need to install it under OS/2, and I am at a loss. What is the procedure for installing USB printers? (I plan to use the Canon i950 driver that is in the Omni set of drivers.)
